Marathon Coaching and Training Plans
Most runners need 16 to 20 weeks to train for a marathon, building to around four or five runs a week with one long run. A marathon coach sets your goal pace from real data, builds the weeks so you arrive fresh, and changes the plan when life gets in the way.

How long does it take to train for a marathon?
For most runners with a base of three or four runs a week, 16 to 20 weeks is the sweet spot. First timers coming from shorter distances often need longer. I build the block backwards from your race date so the hardest weeks land four to six weeks out and you taper properly.
What does a coached marathon block look like?
How do I pick a marathon goal time?
Your goal should come from a recent race or time trial, not a wish. A recent half marathon is the best predictor. Then the training paces come from that goal. Try the marathon pace calculator to see what your target means per kilometre.
How many kilometres a week do I need?
It depends on your experience and goal. First timers often peak somewhere around 40 to 60 km a week. Runners chasing a sub 3:30 usually need more. The right number is the most you can absorb consistently without breaking down, and that is exactly what a coach watches.
What is the longest run before a marathon?
Most of my athletes peak with long runs of around 28 to 32 km, or about three hours, whichever comes first. Going longer often costs more recovery than it gives fitness.

Do I need a coach for a marathon?
No, but a coach helps you pick a realistic goal, pace your training correctly, fuel properly and adjust when you get sick or busy, which is where most marathon blocks go wrong.
How do I choose my marathon goal pace?
Base it on a recent half marathon or 10K result, then test it in long runs with marathon pace sections. Use the marathon pace calculator to convert your goal into a pace per kilometre.
When should I start my marathon taper?
Usually two to three weeks out. Volume drops, but you keep some faster running so your legs stay sharp.
