How do I calculate my marathon pace?
Divide your goal time in seconds by 42.195. For example, 4 hours is 14,400 seconds, divided by 42.195 gives 341 seconds, which is 5:41 per km. The calculator does this for you.
Should I run even splits in a marathon?
Even pacing, or a very slightly faster second half, is the most reliable way to run your best marathon. Going out too fast is the most common reason runners fade after 30 km.
Why does my watch say I ran further than 42.2 km?
GPS watches drift, and you rarely run the shortest line around corners. Most runners record 42.4 to 42.8 km, so aim a few seconds per km faster than the calculator says.

Questions runners ask
What pace is a 4 hour marathon per km?
5:41 per kilometre, or about 9:09 per mile. Aim slightly faster, around 5:36 to 5:38, to allow for GPS measuring long.
What pace do I need for a sub 3 marathon?
About 4:16 per kilometre, or 6:52 per mile.
What pace is a 3:30 marathon?
About 4:59 per kilometre.
How do I calculate my marathon pace?
Divide your goal time in seconds by 42.195 to get seconds per kilometre, then convert to minutes and seconds.
Should I run even splits in a marathon?
Yes. Even pacing or a slightly faster second half usually produces the best result. Starting too fast is the most common mistake.
How accurate are marathon time predictors?
They are a useful guide, but they assume you have done the long run and endurance training for the marathon. Use a recent half marathon as the best predictor.
