WAYNE’S RUNNING ACHIEVEMENTS

WHO IS WAYNE CALVERT

Wayne Calvert is an online run coach and active competitive runner based in Sydney, Australia. He is the founder of Run The Race, an online coaching programme helping distance runners at all levels train smarter, improve their running form, and hit specific race targets from 5K to 100K.

Wayne has been competing in road, trail, and ultramarathon events for over 13 years, with more than 20 podium finishes.

His recent race record includes first place (50YR) at the 2026 UTA100K by UTMB, first place at the 2025 and 2024 Bravehearts Marathon, the 2024 & 2026 Southern Sydney Marathon, the 2024 Adelaide 6-hour Ultra, and the 2023 Adelaide 12-hour Ultra.

He is not a retired competitor who once ran fast. He is still racing and still winning — and he coaches using the same principles he applies to his own training every week.

how wayne coaches his athletes

Wayne's coaching is built on three foundations: structured periodisation, correct running form, and data from every session.

Every new athlete in both coaching programmes receives a full slow-motion running form analysis. Wayne reviews the video personally, writes a report identifying the key inefficiencies, and builds a 10-week corrective programme to address them. Most runners are not being held back by their fitness. They are being held back by how they move.

Training is delivered through Final Surge — a professional coaching platform used by elite coaches worldwide. Athletes' GPS watches sync automatically after every session, so Wayne sees the full data: pace, heart rate, power, cadence, ground contact time. He responds to sessions that need feedback, flags warning signs before they become injuries, and adjusts plans in real time based on what the data is showing.

What Wayne Coaches

Wayne coaches runners across all distances on road and trail:

5K and 10K — speed development, form, race-specific preparation. Half marathon — aerobic base, threshold work, race-day execution. Marathon — structured periodisation, long run strategy, fuelling and pacing plans. 50K to 100K ultramarathon — training load management, back-to-back long runs, event nutrition, and race strategy. Timed ultra events — 6-hour and 12-hour and Back Yard Ultra format event preparation.

He has personal race experience at every distance he coaches, including top-3 finishes at GNW 100km and multiple 12-hour ultra events. When you ask him how to pace the back half of a marathon, he is answering from a race he ran recently, not from a coaching textbook.

Why an Active Competing Coach Makes a Difference

Most coaching programmes are designed by coaches who stopped competing years ago. Wayne is still racing — and still testing what works on himself before putting it into his athletes' programmes. If a training approach isn't holding up in his own preparation, it doesn't go into his coaching system.

This also means his coaching philosophy is honest about what racing actually demands. The difference between kilometre 30 and kilometre 35 in a marathon is not something you can explain from theory. Wayne explains it from experience he had last season.

WHY YOU NEED A COACH

Wayne's athletes don't follow generic plans — they are coached. Every session is tracked, every data point reviewed, and plans are adjusted in real time based on what's actually happening in training.

Most runners train alone and repeat the same mistakes for years without anyone catching them. Wayne sees what you can't see yourself — in your GPS data, your form video, and your weekly load — and corrects it before it costs you a race.
