Coach or app?
Running Coach vs Running App
A running app gives you a decent automated plan for around $20 to $35 a month. A human coach costs more but can see your form, hear that you are exhausted, and change their mind. If you are new and self motivated an app can be enough. If you want to break through a plateau or stay injury aware, a coach is the better tool.

When is an app enough?
Apps are good. If you are new, motivated, injury free and happy to follow a plan exactly, an app will get you to a start line. Be fair to them: they are cheap, convenient and getting smarter.
What can a coach do that an app cannot?
- See your form and fix how you move
- Notice that your heart rate is high on easy runs and ask why
- Hear that work is crushing you this week and change the plan
- Talk you out of racing through a niggle
- Build race day pacing and fuelling around you
Can I keep using my app with a coach?
Yes. Your Final Surge plan syncs to your watch, and you can keep logging to Strava. Many runners move from an app to coaching when they want the next level.
Questions runners ask
Is Runna as good as a running coach?
Runna and similar apps produce good automated plans, but they cannot review your form, answer questions with judgement or adapt to your life the way a human coach can.
Is a running app worth it?
For new, self motivated runners with no injuries, yes. Runners chasing a big goal or a breakthrough usually get more from a coach.
What is better than a running app?
A human coach who builds your plan, reviews your runs and your running form, and adjusts the plan when life changes.
Can an app replace a running coach?
Not fully. Apps follow rules. A coach notices things the data does not show and makes judgement calls.
How much does a running app cost in Australia?
Most running training apps cost roughly $20 to $35 a month. Run The Race Ask the Coach is $25 a fortnight with a real coach.
Can I use Garmin Coach and a coach together?
You would normally follow one plan. With coaching, your Final Surge plan replaces Garmin Coach and syncs to your Garmin.
