How to choose your goal race

  • Give yourself time. Allow around 16 to 20 weeks to train for a marathon, 10 to 14 weeks for a half and 8 to 10 weeks for a 10K, on top of a base of regular running.
  • Pick the course for the goal. Chasing a personal best? Choose a flat course in cool weather. Want an adventure? Choose trail.
  • Check the entry rules. Big races sell out, and some use a ballot or qualifying times. Enter early.
  • Plan your season. One or two key races a year, with a few shorter races as tune ups, works for most runners.

Questions runners ask

What is the best marathon in Australia for a personal best?

The Gold Coast Marathon is known for its flat, fast course and mild winter weather, which makes it a popular choice for personal bests.

How far ahead should I pick a goal race?

Around four to six months ahead for a marathon, and three months for a half. That leaves time for a proper build and a taper.

How do I get into the Sydney Marathon?

Entry is by ballot or by meeting the qualifying times, so plan well ahead and check the official site for when the ballot opens.

What is a good first trail race?

A shorter trail race such as the UTA 11K or 22K, or a trail marathon such as Six Foot Track once you have some trail experience.

Can you build a plan for my race?

Yes. Tell me your race and date, and your plan is built back from race day with the right build, taper and race strategy.
